Dear Carys and Miss Adair’s class:

The Cromeleques de Almendres is about an hour drive outside of Lisbon. It is one of Europe's older megalithic sites, large rounded carved stones or obelisks, set up in circles.

Part of this site was built 5000 years before Stonehenge and was used as a kind of calendar, aligned with the sun to tell changes to the seasons so that the people who lived there knew that spring and summer were coming and it was time to move down the coast. It also had other purposes that both protected the people associated with them and made their community connection stronger.
